Eating Healthy on a Budget

Depending on where you live and the time of year, it may be easier said than done!!

The one thing I have noticed for myself is that it doesn’t have to be more expensive.  Personally I don’t eat meat of any kind, so that cost is eliminated for me, now my family does so I do have to take that into consideration.  Where I live, I don’t have a variety of places to shop so I am limited unless I go into the ‘big’ city, so I have had to get creative at times.

What I do have available is local farmers, and since I live in BC we or they can grow things most of the year.  It is rotational and that is good to mix things up.  We also have a health food coop here where we can buy healthy, organic produce and more in small amounts or in bulk.  Could there be one in your area or could you start one as I would be confident to say, you  probably aren’t the only one looking for healthy or organic options for a good price where you live!!

Buying in bulk is usually a good idea, but make sure you do know your prices as it may not always be.

Buy in bulk with other people or families, this sometimes can make a huge difference in savings.

Depending on where you live, organic may not always be an options price wise……do the best you can.

What could you eliminate to be able to add more healthy food into your lifestyle and I mean that seriously……… much cable are you using or need…….all the extra packages or could you reduce in down some and put the savings towards being able to choose healthier foods?  I say that as for me that is always a first choice, I believe that my health is a priority and some things I can let go of.

You will also notice that when you are eating healthy and raw or mostly raw, that you will start eating different or even less as you are feeding your body nutritionally so it will actually not be as hungry as often, unless……..they is emotional eating going on.

Sometimes in the winter months buying frozen foods are ok, if they are flash frozen.  Remember that so much fresh  produce is now available to us throughout the year, but when was it picked, how long did it travel for or sit in bins?  Most fresh food this time of year when not as much is available to us locally is picked before it’s really ripen, then sits for awhile, and once picked it starts to lose it’s nutritional value, yet if it was picked before it was really ripe, well, there could be very little value left.

Eat what is in season, no matter how little that is, as nature planned it that way.

Sometimes mail order for some things like nuts, seeds etc are priced way better even with shipping included, so don’t be afraid to check some out and even bulk buy with some friends to further reduce the cost.

Some supplementation in the winter months may be of help.

Do the best you can and if things are tight, don’t beat yourself up or feel guilty about eating something that is not ‘raw’ or as healthy as it should be. I do believe that does harm as well.

Cauliflower Cous Cous

Want a change from the grains yet still be healthy??
This is a quick and easy recipe and when stored in the fridge is good for a few lunches or side dish for dinner. Coniferous veggies are good for helping out with hormones as well, just in case you were wondering!!!

Cauliflower Cous Cous

1 head cauliflower broken up and put into food processor

1 red pepper finely chopped

1 cup chopped spinach

1/2 cup parsley finely chopped

1/4 cup cilantro finely chopped

2 green onions

2 cloves garlic minced

4 oz cold pressed olive oil (I might add a little flax oil or reduce olive and add flax since it’s good for you)

1 – 2 oz braggs

1/2 lemon juice

Process cauliflower in processor until finely chopped, put into bowl and add remaining chopped veggies and herbs.

Mix well.

Add oil and braggs and mix up well, you can always adjust these to taste.

I like throwing some chili peppers in with mine and a little avocado cut up on the side to finish it off.

Cabbage Salad

Cabbage is very good for us, and we are used to coleslaw. This is just a variety with a little zest to have something different.

This can be used as an appetizer, main dish or good for lunches.

Cabbage Salad

1/2 head of cabbage finely chopped or shredded

ends of 3 green onions finely sliced

1 tbsp black sesame seeds (more or less depending on your liking)

almonds cut up or sliced


4 oz cold pressed olive oil

1/12 oz balsamic vinegar (this is not raw and I try not to use vinegar, but sometimes you just have to!!)

2 tbsp honey

1 clove garlic

a pinch of sea salt

Mix up the dressing and toss with cabbage, green onions, sesame seeds and almonds.

Veggie Soup

Warm Veggie Soup

After the holidays it’s nice to start eating a little healthier again and a nice warming soup helps with both!!

It’s good to get a variety of different veggies and fruits in your diet right now, actually as often as possible.

The soup I made today was quick and easy and tasty!!

This recipe served 2, so you can reduce it or keep it as it is.

2 stalks celery chopped up

1 carrot chopped up

1/2 of a big beet chopped

2 cloves garlic

juice of 1/2 lemon

pinch sea salt

aprox 1 tbsp dulse

1 average size avocado

water (oops I forgot to measure it – but depending on how thick or creamy like you like it will determine how much water, so start off with a little and add more) I also boiled the water then let it sit for a few minutes and cool down a bit and added it in the blender with all the ingredients listed above, it’s nice to have it warmer when it’s cold or raining outside.

I added in some chili peppers for some extra zing, but that is optinal!!

Blend up till smooth and the desired thickness,  add any other spices you would like to taste, serve immediately and enjoy.  It’s always good with some raw crackers too!!

What a Sunset New Years Day!!!

The New Year…..

The New Year…..

Since I’ve had some time to Chillax…….I have made some decisions to really change how things are going……to flowing.  I think in order to do so, I have to change up the energy, so 2010 was a year of surviving and 2011 is going to be a year of Thriving!!!!

That is my intention, I am clear on my direction, I am making new friends, having fun, laughing and doing new things…….so many of us over time have made the same New Years Resolutions, usually after a glass of wine or two or……(lol)…..been there, only to start January off with good intentions and then going back to the same old same old………NOT this year!

How do I know that for sure?

For me, I did the Polar Bear swim this year….yup…….and then stood on the beach with a few people and laughed and laughed.  You know what, it wasn’t half as bad as I thought it was going to be……….which made me wonder, how many other things am I putting off (I only talked about this for about 6 years) and how many things I am fearing, which aren’t worth fearing????
