I had the privilidge of photographing a new friend last week that has really inspired me and I just wanted to share why.

I met him through a friend at his daughters new restaurant in Steveston outside of Vancouver – The Living Cafe – which I highly recommend stopping in if you are out that way – the food was amazing, and had choices of raw, live, whole and gluten free – what a great combination!!

Back on track here, well I met her father Kevin and we got talking and we ended up setting up a meeting to take some pictures for his new website and upcoming competition, which at the time I didn’t realize it was for a competition I thought it was for just his web site.

untitled (97 of 222)In the process of realizing that he told me his story of turning 40 realizing where he was at his age and health and found a book that got his inspired and committed to the 90 day program.  he had before and after pictures which blew me away.  Not that he was big and fat before, maybe could lose a few pounds but his after pictures in just 90 days were truly amazing.

He ate clean and committed to working out every day.

Since then he eats healthy, works out and feeds his mind with great things.

 

 

 

 

He also found this cool Gymstick thing that he is using, now promoting and creating videos for people like me showing me how to use it and what I can do with it and not have to go to the gym – how cool is that??

Now he is entering his first competition and he is 50 something – that got me motivated.

As I hear so many excuses from people ALL the time – I’m too old, it’s that age thing, I’m not as young as I used to be blah blah blah

untitled (181 of 222)People like Kevin get inspired, make a decision, take action AND commit to it – therefore they get results.

I had to look at some areas of my life and ask some questions of where I wasn’t showing up and being the me I could truly be.  What excuses were I using and where was I hiding??

Are you doing the same thing?

This isn’t about beating anyone up it’s about Challenging you to stop playing small and be YOU.

I start a 10 day Transformation Cleanse next Monday – the day after Mother’s Day 🙂 – I will keep track of my progress and share – I’m stepping up and out.

Being Present – what does that truly mean?

Have you ever tried meditating?

Isn’t as easy as it sounds is it?

For most of us  we spend too much time in our heads , or I can really only speak for myself – I have spent way too much time in my head!!

I who struggled with an eating disorder, also struggled to be in my body most of the time, it was easier and less painful to be in my head – and therefore I got to be a little on the analytical side – not saying there is anything wrong with that, but for me it wasn’t always the best thing.

Not wanting to be in the body for whatever reason, which is somehow connected to some sort of pain in most cases, is a way of numbing ourselves, not feeling, which easily leads to over eating or binge eating.  It also leads to multi tasking and rushing through things or life.

Being fully present is not always an easy thing to do – just try meditating.

But the more we can slow down, connects to the inner core, the more present we can be in the moment – not reliving the past (especially memories that elicits anger, guilt, pain, frustration etc) or worrying about the future but truly being full y present in the moment is about being fully connected and alive.

The past is over – let it go, forgive yourself (or anyone else) and let go of any negative emotions.

The future is not here yet, don’t waste the current moment worrying about something that hasn’t come yet.  That’s not to say don’t plan things but I think you know the difference.

For me I am finding breath work has really helped me.  It quiets the mind, relaxes the body, gets me in my body and any emotions that come up I can breath through and release them with ease allowing for more calmness in my life.

Also Long Exposure Photography – it helps with my patience, staying focused and very present.

Whatever helps you spend more time being present – you might be amazed at how doing something so small yet significant can impact your life, besides YOU deserve to have, feel and live a phenomenal life – don’t you think? 🙂

Slowing Down

When we really start paying attention – all the signs are there especially the ones our bodies are sending us IF we are paying attention or open to receive them.  Slowing down can be hard for many people especially for parents, single parents or multi- taksers…….something I know well!!

I have been on a work stint in film for the last several months that was quite interesting – would be a good way of putting it.

I learned a lot, met a lot of people, saw some creative & cool things, learned how to do some creative things, saw actors and actresses, met some, watched how shows and movies were made, sets dressed, stages being constructed and oh so much more.

I also worked long days and at my age or where I am at in life – isn’t fulfilling and doesn’t really feed my soul or nurture me.

That is what is sooooo cool about life- there are so many options to choose differently or what to experience.  We really are only limited by our minds!!

I am on a much needed break and I have been able to have some down time – my body was yelling at me – basically with  Adrenal Fatigue – doesn’t get much louder than that – going on overdrive, stress, little sleep and not paying attention to what my soul truly desires.  Thank goodness I have been eating healthy through this all (and no not pumped up on tons of caffeine either) – yes still somewhat easy to do especially when it’s a priority in my life.

Our bodies really do talk to us.  They communicate through subtle hints, messages, aches and then they are screaming at us to get our attention when it turns to pain or fatigue.

Since being off I am doing all I can to nurture my body and soul and it’s amazing how fast things are shifting.

Daily walks, gentle yoga, breath work, meditation, proper supplementation, water, little stress, self love, being creative (for me) and rushing to go nowhere!!! lol

One of the things I have been playing with to further help me slow down is Long Exposure Photography and Black & White Photography (which I used to love doing and hand yes hand coloring) – patience, breath, stillness, quiet, calming – how does it get more magical than that.

Hoping to inspire and share with you in some upcoming posts on the Photography I have been exploring and enjoying – hope you do too.

Today take some time for you and listen to what your body is saying – honor it, be in the moment and have an attitude of gratitude!

When was the last time you were at the market and had room to move?

Well, it may not always be that crowded where you are but markets here especially  Chinatown in Vancouver are usually busy all day.

I like to think of it like my mind – when do I have quiet times?

My mind is busy, always planning, thinking, wondering, learning, dreaming and creating.

I have to remind myself to take time to quiet it sometimes.

I love early morning walks – before most people are up (except this time of the year when it’s still dark out lol)

Connecting with nature – connecting with self.

Just like going to the market for fresh foods – quiet the mind for fresh thoughts.

Be present and live in the moment.

I was up and out early this morning to shoot the old steam clock in Gastown in downtown Vancouver.

A couple of men passed by me with my camera and tripod and the one asked me a few questions.  On his way back he asked a few more questions and we got talking and he quickly shared with me his life story – owning a multiple million dollar company to finding drugs at the age of 43 to being homeless, living on the streets for quite a bit and then cleaning his life up.  He’s now 66, clean, loving life and asked me if he was too old to get into Photography as he wanted a hobby and this was of interest.

Hell no I said – you are never too old to do things you love or that interest you.

So what interests you? Are you doing it or is there an excuse holding you back?

So often we put off things thinking one day, or we clutter our lives we too much ‘stuff’.  Being able to purge after this move has been amazing – I have only kept things that make me happy and I love and love using.  It’s so freeing – like being out taking pictures – something I was putting off – not any longer as it makes me happy!!!

I love this photo – it is of my kids when they were younger and I took them into the studio on my birthday one day and I got a bunch of great photos of them in a short time – you know kids!!

But saying that as you can see here they are being silly, themselves and totally in the moment and not at all worrying about things or putting themselves down.

Here is  a question for you – how often during the day do you think about or criticize your body or parts of your body?

Something like this – OOOOh I shouldn’t have eaten that!!

Oh that is going to go right to my hips!!

Oh my thighs are fat (or whatever else) and I hate you.

I have no boobs!

My hair is terrible!

God, I look old and tired today!

Oh I look fat!

I look fat in this outfit – oh I hate my body!

and so on and so on

How often do you say or think – thighs I love you, I love you no matter what size you are!!

Body – no matter what I just love you!

Today we are going to be friends, lovers actually!!

Seriously, how often is the first scene more common than the bottom one?

I know, I speak from experience – we can be brutal.

Here’s a thought I want to leave you with.

WE are NOT our bodies – yes it’s true.  Think of it this way – you live in a house (or apartment or tent or wherever) when you move you leave that house – you are not that house, as the same for your body – it’s your house while you are here but when you die, you really don’t die just your body does, so you are not your body, so why not make peace with it and get along as great friends or better yet lovers as would you talk to one of your friends or lovers the way you do sometimes to your body??

If not, then stop it!!!

Practice each day throughout the day just sending your body love and gratitude.  Remember Dr. Emoto – messages in water, well we are mostly water so what you send out in the way of thoughts and feelings to your body, your body picks up everything and if you are not liking your body it hears that.

Happy, loving feelings, thoughts and emotions are powerful transmitters, as everything is energy!!!

Ever go into a friends house and you can feel the tension, later she admits her and her husband had a big fight right before you came over, and I could go on with examples.

Match the vibration of what you would like – now you probably won’t change into a 5’10” model figure but honestly would you really want that?  Look around, bodies come in all sizes and shapes – there is NO ONE who is perfect, besides, perfect is boring!! Loving your body as it is healthy living – try it you might like it!! 🙂

Take Time to Smell the Flowers

Take time to smell the flowers

How often do we really take time to smell the flowers??

I have this great little pond at my house and I am enjoying the flowers -photographing them under different light, waiting for them to open up each morning, watching them grow from under the water.

I guess I am a little fascinated as I haven’t been able to see this type of flower grow before……and it reminds me of Yoga, Mediation….k not really but what those symbolize…..calm, peace, quiet, beauty, connection and love.

We are so busy doing doing doing in our lives we often times don’t find the time to  slow down and smell the flowers, to connect, to be present, to be……..remember……we are human beings not human doings!!!
