Sometimes living in Canada during the winter months can gt pretty blah – especially here in Vancouver where it tends to rain a lot!!
This fall / winter for me didn’t start out so great, actually pretty crappy, but new things, opportunities and more took over and things changed – they became great!!
You might be wondering what happen to my blog as I have not been posting since the New Year – I was going through major transformation, life changes, building a business and really trying to decide what direction I wanted to move forward in with my blog once and for all – as I decided I didn’t want to keep continuing my food blog.
Now that, Spring is here, just like the animals I feel it is time to really emerge and share my new message, insights, my changes and more and have made a firm commitment to getting back into my photography.
So out of the Winter Blahs comes Spring where things are fresh and blossoming and looking great!!!
How many times have you started a ‘diet’ only to find yourself craving the foods you said you wouldn’t eat any longer or doing good for a few hours or a couple of days then gorging on almost anything in the evening? Or just having a bite of something ‘forbidden’ then feeling guilty, eating it all, then feeling even more guilt and then just letting lose eating anything and everything? Or trying one of the qazillion ‘diets’ out there only to find that you are eating the same thing day in and day out……how fun or nutritious is that??
I thought eating somewhat healthy was common sense, but due to all the different ‘diets’ out there, all the mis leading advertising….low fat, high protein etc etc, eat for your blood type or eye color or depending on what beach you live on, it can be quite confusing to say the least!!! And if you follow the food pyramid – Standard American Diet….SAD or even some dieticians, it can be overwhelming.
As I am writing this I am sitting in a funky cafe on the Sea to Sky Hwy and it’s so cool to see what this cafe is offering for food. Healthy yet simple things and the place is packed……my kind of vibe!! They make a killer Green drink too!!
Over the next couple of weeks, my goal is to focus on some easy, sensible, simple, yet effective changes one can make in one’s way of eating ( and even thinking) so that diet is NO LONGER a part of one’s vocabulary or way of living……because it sucks!!!!
I will be providing more recipes on healthy, natural and nutritious yet simple to do recipes so that making changes or substitutions can be done easily and have the ability to stick to them.
But we are going to even do more than that as it can and will extend out in other areas of your life as well.
It begins with your thoughts……about food, your body and even your life (work, relationships, pleasures)
Eating should be fun, joyful, nutritious and even involve the senses. I know not everyone likes to be a chef in the kitchen or doesn’t always have the time, BUT in my world I believe that when we do take the extra time it pays off in how we feel . Before you know it it becomes part of our routine or habit and it’s not alot of effort. If we don’t put care into what and how we feed our body (and even our minds) then how can we expect to live a quality life??
I joke often that women put more attention on getting their nails and hair done or even facials and men more time on their vehicles yet totally ignore what they put into their bodies.
Quality vs Quantity.
Calories / Nutrition in vs Calories / Nutrition out.
When we can transition to healthier ways of eating and thinking, then times like New Years become less important as we won’t have the cycle of in the moment (and usually after a couple of drinks :)) of making these great changes only to find by the end of January we are back to doing and eating and thinking the same old same old.
So, it’s the beginning of September, kids are going back to school and there’s no time like NOW to start making today a great day and eating healthier.

You may or may not have heard about the 90 Day Challenge outside of my blog here, if you haven’t I am sure you will very shortly!!
People are joining the Challenge in BIG numbers…….36 619 in May, 41 551 in June, almost 50 000 in July and last night by 6 pm it was 57 701…..and I know it’s gone up since then!!
Someone is joining Vi every 30 seconds, the company is doubling in size every 90 days in the last 18 months.
Because it works, like I said in my previous post, most people don’t eat breakfast and if by chance they do it’s caffeine, sugar, white flour (donuts’, bagels, muffins etc) or cereal which aren’t the best choices.
Alot of people don’t even eat lunch or just keep drinking more coffee which has really surprised me. How does one expect to function well or even feel half decent?? The more you go without eating the more you put on the weight.
Obesity has become an epidemic…..but this is for anyone who wants to either lose weight, get into better shape or just feel better – more energy.
People are getting good results, they are taking responsibility for the way or choices of ‘food’ they are eating and starting to make it more of a priority. The Vi shake (and of course it tastes great) is the vehicle to help people start. Yes it’s a meal replacement, but add it in some Almond milk or juice and a bunch of fruit and you are good to go!!!
That is a good start to the day.
It’s also helping people cut back on their food bills…..in other words saving money.
Many people are even getting their product for FREE….not pay now and get a cheque back in 4-6 weeks, which you get taxed on but you don’t pay……in other words saving money.
The shakes are packed full of nutrition, protein, enzymes, fiber and more!!
Then there is the Vi community where there is support, shake recipes, meal plans, exercise plans and lots of people doing the same thing!!!
It’s not hype it’s a buzz……and people love being part of something that is working.

We went up and spent the day in Whistler the other day and this couple really caught not only my attention but many others as well.
I thought how cool and if more of us couldn’t be like that……Dare to Stand out instead of following the status quo all the time or trying to keep up with the Jone’s……who are they anyways??
Sometimes that is going against what everyone else thinks, or playing safe or worrying about what other people will think.
Sometimes it’s really about tuning in to who we really are or need. Listening to that gut instinct.
I had that recently. That strong gut feeling that if I did something or went to to this place it wouldn’t be good for me or wasn’t in my best interest or whatever. See, sometimes our human minds try to figure ‘it’ out, but we can’t always. Every time I had this strong feeling in my gut and listen to it, it became very clear later on why and when I didn’t listen to it….oh boy lets not go there!!
This time I did listen to it, which I really try and do more and more. It kept bugging me if we were to go away to this place to meet these people. It was a strong feeling of don’t go. So I didn’t, and I soon found out why and was very glad I didn’t go and in the end these people ended up not being such good friends after all.
When it involves other people, it doesn’t mean they are bad people or anything like that, they may just not be good for you or at that time in your life.
Sometimes in your life, it may mean going against what everyone else is saying or doing…..always honor that inside of you. It’s in all of us, but we get so busy in life or trying to figure things out or in between our 60 000 plus thoughts a day maybe don’t even want to have to think about it!!
Dare to Stand Out if you have to or be different…..you really do win in the long run, no matter what they may say. It is your life anyways isn’t it???

Obesity is on the rise and in every country. It is becoming an epidemic. Over 1 BILLION adults are overweight with 300 million clinically obese. 22 million children worldwide under the age of five…..YES FIVE…..are obese……are you kidding me????? NO!!!!
Adolescents and teenagers have doubled and tripled since the sixties and seventies. Could it be learned behaviors or habits??
With being overweight or obese comes some major health problems……type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular, hypertension, stroke, high blood pressure, and more….oh but wait there is probably a pill for those……sorry for being cynical!!
How does one become obese? I can’t honestly answer that as I have never been obese, I can only give my thoughts and ideas and information what what I have read, do and don’t do. I also understand that in some……in some cases there are health problems like thyroid etc. It still comes back to diet, can it be reversed? I am not sure.
Here goes….when a person eats foods that are high in saturated fats, sugar, dead, processed, chemcial ladden ‘foods’, and reduced physical activity weight is put on.
So I want to take it even further, as it’s up to each person to be responsible for themselves, which is hard in our society it is always someone else’s fault…..or something like the economy……what one puts in their mouth is up to them….period. We do get confusing messages from one thing being the cancer cure last week to it being no good next week and so on……….keep it simple and natural, if it’s man made, it’s probably not good……learn and take the time to read ingredients……if you can’t say it or don’t have a frickin clue what it is…..it probably isn’t good!!!
Are you emotional eating? In other words are you eating because you are bored, sad, depressed, scared or any other feeling you don’t want to feel? Eat when you are hungry.
Are you eating in front of the tv or computer so you have no idea of what or how much you are eating? Eat at the table with nothing on paying attention to what you are eating and how much, listen to your body and don’t shovel it in.
Stop using the excuse that it runs in the family or it’s in my genes……….create a new / different story, one that empowers you!!!
When we eat alot of fast foods, take out food, package foods they are full of things the body can’t really use or can’t digest. They are usually full of extra calories we don’t need, and because there are chemicals in these foods, they become addictive and we start craving them and then eating them more often, sometimes every day. The fat starts piling on, the energy goes down and the cycle begins. If you don’t believe me, watch Super Size Me.
Another things people don’t think of or pay attention to is the sizes of things now. When I was a kid, and I know that was just a few years ago…:)……a small was about 6 oz, med 8 oz and large 10 oz. Now small is about 12 oz right on up to the super gulp 64 oz……really???? Cookies fit in my hand, now it fits into a frisbee……oh I only had one cookie…..yeah who is fooling who?? Actually cut out alot of pop for one thing, that will help tremendously as it’s just chemicals and sugar and very addictive.
Fast foods and package foods are full of cheap fillers…..high corn frutose syrup and palm oil to mention just a couple, empty calories. no nutritional value, high in saturated fat and cheap fillers.
Here are the demographics in the US on obesity, (Canada is not far behind).
Red is the states that have an obesity problem……Scary isn’t it?? That is the most recent I could find and it’s a couple of years old.
So since I’ve done some b#@%ing, I should offer some solutions, as there is no magic pill or potion.
Start the day with a glass of water
Choose live foods more often, (things natural, coming from the earth… fruit veggies, grains etc)
Eat when you are hungry
Stay away from the white stuff……flour, sugar, salt
Sit down with out a ton of things going on around you like eating in front of the tv and eat your food, one mouthful at a time
Carry healthy snacks with you and or have snacks to carry you through the day so when you get hungry you can choose wisely
Don’t skip meals so that you are famish later and eat everything in site
Don’t starve yourself
Stay away from high saturated fat foods
Eat smaller portions
Don’t eat late at night
Start your day with a good breakfast…..don’t skip it
Surround yourself with people / support systems who are making changes, want changes, are committed and are doing it if you really want to make lifestyle changes and can help / support you and on a mission
Face the emotions that you are pushing down so that you can go on and release the weight and feel healthier in many ways
Get healthy extra nutrition in your diet as we need more than what we can get from our food
Move, even brisk walking for 30 mins a day will help get you started
When you put better foods into your body you will feel better and have more energy so that you can move.
In my opinion, obesity is curable, it’s a way of life, it’s a lifestyle that has choices and decisions every day just like everything else. One just needs to take responsibility and action and make better or different decisions, so why not start today as it starts with a single step.

Eating healthy and fresh is so much easier in the summer and right now Basil seems to be abundant!!!
Here is an easy low fat Pesto sauce that makes for a great dip or spread.
Low Fat Pesto
– 1 can Navy beans
– 1 cup Packed fresh Basil leaves
– 1-2 cloves garlic (depending on how much garlic you like!!)
– 1 1/2 tsp sea salt (adjust to taste)
– juice 1/4 lemon
– 1 tbsp cold pressed Olive oil
Put all ingredients into a food processor, blend until smooth.
Use as a dip for crackers, carrots, celery etc or use as a spread of Rice cakes, cabbage leave or some other flat bread style of your choice. You can add chopped tomatoes, spinach or whatever you would like.
If you have, you are probably wondering if it works or another hype up magic potion……NOT!! If you haven’t, well you’re at the right place.
I have been doing The Challenge for the past couple of months and have just decided to re-start my Challenge this week…..why? I wanted to raise the bar. After being part of the Challenge, I feel great, that was my goal when starting as I was pretty healthy outside of my low iron. Now I want to take it to another level of all areas of my life, but especially my fitness levels and getting back into great shape. I have let that go over the past few years of not really working out much…..well like I used to anyways. The people that have been joining me in the Challenge are blowing me away with the results they are getting too!! The biggest converter has been my husband……..as you know we’ve always have made shakes in the morning, tried many powders over the years and then just greens. These shakes taste amazing with many different recipes. My husband, after a couple of weeks on the shakes came home one day and said……’You know, I have been feeling so much better lately, happier, more energized at work like never before and the only thing we’re doing different are the shakes…..so it must be them, can I take another one with me for my break in the morning as they are really good.’ Which really caught my attention as he conveniently would forget his Green Smoothie occasionally or not drink it all in the past but not now!!! I’ve personally found the Body By Vi Challenge to target FAT, and leave the MUSCLE. So even though we were making shakes before they didn’t have the same level of nutrition and ingredients that Body By Vi and ViSalus had. And that has been key for us……..nutrition……..we need more of it these days as the daily stressors we encounter in our activities far outweigh what our ancestors went through in their lifetime!!! The neatest thing I am seeing so far,is how this is having a domino affect on people, they add a shake to their way of eating or not really eating especially in the morning, which mostly consists of adding fruit, so people are now eating fruit, or simply even having breakfast that isn’t full of caffeine, sugar and empty fillers. Then because they are feeling better and have more energy are making better food choices throughout the day, then also starting to find a form of exercise even if it’s walking after work for 30 mins. So, is it all hype?? No, these products work and people are making changes and getting results……that is what the buzz is about and this is a good thing. Obesity, diabetes and heart disease are serious matters, The Body by Vi – 90 Day Challenge is making a difference a HUGE difference in that and I love being part of that!!!

– 1 cup Pecans or Walnuts – 4- 6 Madjool Dates ( or raisins approx 1/4 cup) can adjust for sweetness Put into processor and blend up till crumbly. What is left over (if any) can be stored in a container and kept in the fridge.
Cut up 1 apple in a bowl (or several if more than one person) and sprinkle nut mixture over top. Eat and enjoy!!!
There comes a point in one’s live, or I can only speak for myself ……..when I look at things and see what is working or what is not, what needs changing, tweaking or eliminating. You know the saying……keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll keep getting what you’ve got or you keep doing what you’re doing but expecting different results!!!!
Part of living, I believe anyways is about challenging oneself to do or be better. Since learning my iron was low and taking the steps to turn that around, I am feeling oh so much better, my energy is coming back and I love that!!! Also a few extra pounds since I did spend a fair bit of time on the couch……….and if anyone saw my video, I have more jiggle to my wiggle…..if you know what I mean…….and that made my friend giggle……..Ok I will stop!!!
Anyways, it is feeling finally like spring time here, so it’s a good time to start this challenge and I encourage anyone who may want to join me on this 90 Day Challenge to do so as so many people have already benefited from this…….feeling and looking better and losing weight. For me it’s more than that, it spills over in so many other areas of one’s life, it’s like it’s a domino effect……when you start feeling better, you start looking better, then acting better (usually anyways), doing better and so on. For me life is about creating new experiences, meeting new people, feeling and being healthy, inspiring people to be the best they can be and when we feel and look good, that is done so much easier.
So……..I got started yesterday, my goal is to lose 10 lbs, tone up, get back into shape by exercising and creating and posting many new recipes to also help in the transition. I did get on the scales……. something I haven’t done in a long time as before numbers used to play with my mind, but my pants were tight and I was prepared to see it, and you know what, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I am where I am and that is ok, as I am excited at where I am going and the changes I am going to see!!!
When I am done the 90 Days I will post my before and after photo, yup took a picture of me in my bathing suit and took my measurements……..only one area that I don’t need to lose anything weight off of and that is my chest!!!
I’ve gathered a few friends to do this with and there are also new friends I am meeting that are part of this, there are so many people looking to look and feel better with results and a community. So if this is something that may interest come join us as we all shed some weight, get into shape and have some fun, and oh stick around for some good recipes too!!!
