Milk – The Deadly Poison……

I stopped drinking milk many many years ago when I had a lot of stomach problems.  The funny thing is, when I look back on it is that it seemed I craved milk, wanted it more and had more problems, when I let it go, and I am sure it was over time as I was about 20 years old, I didn’t crave it, that is a sign sometimes there is an allergy or sensitivity.  As a parent, I didn’t give my kids milk, for awhile though, I did give them Raw Milk, as it was part of a diet thing we were doing. I gave them mostly Almond Milk and I hate to admit it as I didn’t know at the time but Soy Milk as well. Now there are people who drink Raw Milk and if that works for them, fine, but I wonder sometimes about the fact we are the only species drinking another species milk……hmmmmmm

One of my weaknesses at times still is good cheese………yup I admitted it here!! Sometimes I like to throw a little Brie into a salad or I have a Greek salad with some Feta and I am fine, but if I eat cheese I do pay for it later, I can feel the difference in my body, so it is getting so much easier to say no……….but I also know what is part of milk…….therefore cheese, yogurt and butter are condensed versions with the same crap that is added into regular milk………kind of scary isn’t it??  I don’t eat yogurt so that makes that easy and I use coconut oil instead of butter if I need to use it…….ok another weakness of mine is a big bowl of popcorn with a good movie once in awhile……organic popcorn so it’s not GMO’d and coconut oil on it, it’s great for my skin, hair and it tastes great!!

I have been playing with some chocolate recipes and am finally finding one that is working.  When I really have it I will share it, there may be some tweaking needed still.  These chocolates have some good things in them like goji berries, almonds, maca and meta greens and they are raw!!!

Raw cacao has PEA in it, leaves you feeling more love, that is why chocolates are so popular for Valentines Day.  Some raw foodists don’t agree that it’s good.  I believe that some here and there is fine.  Anything that we over indulge with is never good.

Raw Mashed Potatoes & Stuffing

Today’s Giveaway is Simply Raw – Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days DVD

Raw Mashed Potatoes
1 head cauliflower, broken into florets
1/4 C cashews or macadamia nuts
1 cloves garlic, peeled and minced (or to taste)
2 tbsp olive oil, or to taste
sea salt to taste
black pepper to taste

In a food processor, grind nuts fine.
Add cauliflower, and garlic, and process fine.

Add olive oil until mixture looks like fluffy mashed potatoes.

You may want to add a little water if too thick.
Remove from food processor and sprinkle on black pepper to taste

Raw Stuffing

1 C sunflower seeds, soaked and drained
1 C celery
1  onion
1 clove garlic
1 T sage, thyme, savory or any other spice you would like to add, I find that fresh herbs are much nicer                                                1/4 cup parsley

Salt and pepper to taste

In a food processor, grind soaked sunflower seeds fine.

Grind flax seeds fine in a coffee grinder.

Remove ground seeds to a bowl.

Place all ingredients in the food processor and mince.

Adjust spices and salt and pepper to taste
Place in a pie tin, or glass cake dish of suitable size and dehydrate for several hours until dressing has reached your desired consistency.

This recipe I tried using almonds, which worked fine, but a little drier than sunflower seeds, Sunflower seeds work much better.

Stress and Food

Do you ever think that the two are related??

Didn’t someone say once ‘let food be thy medicine’???

After reading this article in the Globe and Mail, Our Busy Life is Making You Sick, I really linked a few things together in my life.  I say that, as I have been going through a major transition in my life and the stress levels are high, actually have been for about 2 years now.  No wonder I have been feeling tired so much!!!

Stress……..fight or flight…….real or not, doesn’t matter.

I also have been looking at patterns in my life, especially around food.  When I am stressed how do I react?  Well sometimes by drinking some wine, oh that relaxing state, can I get it another way?? Yes!! Food…..well I realize that for me, food has played a big role in how I handle stress, I either sustain from food or use it as a comfort, don’t want to feel so I eat or don’t.  You know, that knot or anxious feeling in the stomach???  Stress!!

Restrictive or over indulgence…….not a good picture of health.  This time, realizing that stress plays a major role in the health of your body, I am approaching it quite differently  and it feels oh so much better.

I am eating regularly, making sure I get lots of nutrition from my food.  Eating alot of variety, through out the day, and even when I’m not hungry so to speak as I know I need the nutrition, my body is tired. Stress can be related to so many diseases.

I am juicing, adding super foods, getting out in the sunshine whenever the sun is shining, taking time to connect with nature, some deep breathing, meditating and getting back to doing yoga.  It all helps.  How you are living each day, each moment, eating and thinking, without judgement are huge!!

I can feel the difference.  It doesn’t happen over night, but each day brings more vitality, clarity and a feeling of over all more health.

The more I give my body proper food, therefore proper nutrition, the better it is feeling.  The better it is thinking.  The better it is preforming.

The more I decide to have a healthy relationship with food, the better I feel.  Food should be your medicine, your friend……..not something you abuse or fear.  It should be real.

Have a look at your life, your way of eating and your relationship with your food and yourself.  Are you eating or not eating to feel or not feel certain emotions or are you eating to be and feel healthy?

Give it some thought and remember you deserve only the best……..are you giving yourself that???

Real Raw Chocolate…….Yum!!!

All chocolate is made from the cacao bean (or cocoa bean).

Cacao is chocolate.

Since I have been on a bit of a raw cheesecake exploratory lately, and my family and friends are loving it!!!  I have been using cacao is some form or another in them and they have been tasty, but it is also good to know that real raw cacao has many health benefits as well.

So, here is some info on cacao.  It is the seed or nut of the fruit from the tree it grows on.  They are always in season and like to grow in  temperatures above 60 degrees F with little fluctuations of high humidity.

Way back when, the Cacao beans were used instead of Gold for money by the Mayans and Aztecs.

1879 was when the first milk chocolate bar was produced.

But, that is probably the start of when things changed. Cacao has a high mineral content but it is destroyed when cooked, heated, refined and processed.

Cacao contains the highest concentration of antioxidants of any food in the world, more than (by weight) red wine, (shucks), blue berries, acai, pomegrantes and goji berries combined.

Cacao is the #1 source of magnesium, which is the most deficient major mineral on the SAD (Standard American Diet).

Cacao also contains iron, chromium, manganese, zinc, copper, Vitamin C, Omega 6, Phenylethylamine (PEA), which is not present in processed or cooked, that is the chemicals we produce in our bodies when we fall in love!! Also, anandamide, tryptophan, serotonin, fiber just to name a few.

Most of this is lost when we process, heat and cook cacao.

Because of the nutritional density, it is considered a Superfood by some.

From cacao beans you can get cacao nibs, powder, butter and paste that can go into bars, cheesecakes, beverages, trail mixes, drinks and smoothies.

So, if it’s raw cacao…… is good for you, but like anything, remember in moderation.  You will find the taste slightly bitter at first if you eat a nib on it’s own, but after awhile, if you try one of your old favorite chocolate bars……..taste like junk, fake, yuck!

That last  cheesecake I made was a banana chocolate one and boy was it good!!!

Finally, some chocolate that is good for us!!  David Wolfe thinks so………

A few weeks ago I found out that David Wolfe would be in Vancouver for a few days doing a few different seminars.  I was quite familiar with his name and being a leading expert in nutrition and a ‘raw foodist’ but I really didn’t know much else about him.  He was doing a lecture on Thursday evening and I called a friend to see if she would be interested, which she was, so I said what the heck, lets go.

Well, I was in for a little bit of a surprise I will admit, so much so, that after Thursday nights talk,  I signed up for the all day event this past Saturday and am I ever glad I did!! (Friday’s was sold out already…..)

Not only is David very knowledgeable and passionate about health, nutrition & raw foods but also funny, friendly and full of life.  He knows his stuff and is a wealth of information talking about things that make sense yet we don’t stop and really think about them.

Saturdays talk went into more detail about super foods and super herbs, which I must say living in the rain forest, I am able to go out in my backyard and pick some of these herbs and use,now how cool is that!!??

David was joined by Gabrielle Brick, who brought in elements of self love and emotional eating, and she just filled in some pieces for me that had been missing. Her honesty and vulnerability yet non-judgemental approach was dynamite. Actually both brought to me a few pieces I was missing to my healthy and raw journey so I was really excited to be part of this event ( like you can’t see it in my face here in the photos………..!!!!).

We had an amazing lunch served up by Organic Lives here in Vancouver, thank you Preet and your team, it was awesome!

If ever you get a chance to attend or hear either one speak, go, it will be well worth it.
