Why I Dropped the Raw……

Well ok, not completely. If you haven’t noticed I have changed from Healthy and Raw to just Life with Jodi. I wanted to be able to share more with you than just raw dishes. Sometimes it could be vegan or healthy thoughts or healthy being instead of all food.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love food, I love healthy food, creating healthy dishes, but, and I am going to be honest here, I am not 100% raw for a bit.  I’m not sure if anyone really is, what I do know, for me personally, with my history of when I was younger having disordered eating, that being too restrictive does not work for me. Maybe you are considering that or are aware of that for you? Don’t get me wrong, now I believe that we all could improve our eating and or be adding in more live foods, but sometimes at what cost?
By that, I mean, if you are feeling deprived, or restricted in any way, feeling guilty about eating something that is not raw or as healthy as it could be or eating something you really hate just because it’s healthy when really you want to be eating something else…… much fun is that not too mention what it can do to us emotionally? We all know that our body and minds are connected right? And if you’re hating every mouthful you are taking, well the body will respond and not well over time.
Please don’t take that as it’s ok to eat all the potato chips or junk you want, but I am really learning for me that what may work really well for me, my body, my lifestyle may not work as well for you.   but one must listen to their bodies, themselves and how they are living to be able to do what is best for them.
Some people really want or need to eat meat for example, so in that case, maybe try buying as much organic as possible and still maintain a good balance of fresh, raw live foods. Take it to the hunter’s and gather’s way of eating. Another person may love having some dairy in their diets and choose organic or raw there.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, whew, doesn’t that take the pressure off right there!!??
When we are in tune to our bodies, our thoughts and our emotions and have cleaned up the junk, you may be surprised at what your body does want……..most of the time.
So for today, let go of the restrictions, the guilt, the denial, the shame or anything else that isn’t for your best way of eating, being or living.
Be in the moment, Enjoy the day, Taste your Food and give a lot of Gratitude.

If you can think of anything else make sure to leave a comment.

Here’s to YOUR health!!!

Mango Coconut Smoothie

Mango Coconut Smoothie

I love smoothies, they are such a great way to get good things into our bodies especially when we’re busy!!  Young coconuts are a treat where I live and they have such good nutritional value in them.  it’s good to mix up your smoothies for the greens, which this time I didn’t put any in but you can!!

–  1 1/2 Bananas

–  1 Mango

–  1 young Coconut – the water and the flesh

–  1 tbsp Hemp seeds

Through all ingredients in a Vitamix or blender, process till smooth, pour and enjoy.  Like I said earlier you can add greens to this to if you like.

Almond Mylk

Almond Mylk

Fresh Almond Mylk is such a nice treat.  Great to add to smoothies and the pulp comes in handy for several things.  I will be posting recipes on what you can use the pulp for coming up.

Soak the almonds overnight or at least for 12 hours.  As you can see in these photos I left the skins on, you don’t have to.  If you want to remove the skin, after soaking the nuts over night, drain the water and pour hot water over the nuts, let sit for a minute, drain and then remove the skins, yes by hand each one, it is a little time consuming, so when I don’t have the time, I don’t remove the skins!!

There are 2 cups of almonds.

Once the skins are peeled or not, put the 2 cups of almonds into a Vitamix or blender and add water.  Depending on how creamy you like your Almond Mylk depends on the amount of water.  You can always add more water later.  By the photo you can see I have added more water, a cup or so above the amount of almonds.

2 cups of almonds will get you more than a litre of mylk.  Notice how this is a little brown, the skins are on, when you put the mixture through a cheesecloth most of that stays with the pulp.

Pour the mixture into a nut bag or something similar that will keep in the pulp yet let the liquid through.  You should be able to purchase a nut bag at your local health food store and if not you can order them on line or you can even make your own!

Squeeze out all the liquid until no more comes out.  Save the pulp as there are several things you can do with it and I will post those ideas and recipes coming up.

The pulp will keep in the refrigerator for a week or more.  The mylk should be used within a couple of days for freshness, it may separate.  More water may be added if you so desire.

Healthier Eating Basics

Healthier Eating Basics

There is so much confusion about what is healthy eating and what is not.  So much of it does not make sense.  I always sit in disbelief when one visits maybe a dietician and the list of foods to eat are well, I wouldn’t call some of them food lets just say!!!  Here I am trying to show you ways of adding more raw foods but also just healthier versions of food and eating.  You and I are different, our bodies are different, where we live are different etc so with saying that it is up to you and your body as your body knows what it wants especially the more we clean it up.  While eating 100% or almost works well for me during part of the year it doesn’t all year and that may be for you to depending on where you live.  I don’t have any food allergies but you may.  I may love certain things and well you may not.  I eat way more veggies than I do fruit, but the opposite may be true for you.

Here are a couple of things to consider for keeping it simple and eating healthier altogether as these are true no matter what else you may be eating…..

1.  Eat a lot of Greens, your diet should contain many greens and mix it up don’t eat the same old ones day in and day out.  Variety is       good and what is in season is good too.

2.  Eat real food, that is easy to figure out what real food is…….Ask yourself did it come from or was grown in nature or is it man made       or made in a factory?  (or come in a box or package)

3.  Cut out the whites – that is white flour, white sugar and anything made with them.  Not only do they bring nothing and I mean                     nothing to the body, (which means no nutritional value at all) they rob from the body as well, say no to the white stuff.

4.  Variety and Balance in all that you eat, mix it up don’t keep eating the same foods every day or week, we are meant to eat more of           what is in season but changing it up, getting creative is good.

5.  Keep it Simple – by that I mean the more natural and organic you can eat the better.  If buying any packaged foods read the labels,          you should be able to read the ingredients without pulling out some sort of food dictionary to figure out how to say the word or              what it is.  Also, consider this, if it has a shelf life longer than a dog’s life………well it makes you wonder??

Do you have any guidelines you follow??

Cabbage Salad

Cabbage Salad

It’s good to get some cabbage in your diet and can be easily eaten in colder months. There are two different dressings to choose from and I even mixed them together which was really good!!  This is quick and easy.

– 1/2 head cabbage

– 2 green onions sliced

Dressing 1

– 4 oz cold pressed olive oil

-1 oz balsamic vinegar (not raw)

-2 tbsp honey

-1 garlic clove

celtic sea salt to taste

Dressing 2

-1/2 lemon

-1/2 lime

-1 orange

-4 oz cold pressed olive oil

-1 garlic clove

-piece of ginger approx 1 inch

-celtic sea salt  to taste

Mix together all ingredients from either one, mix in with the cabbage and green onions.

Add black sesame seeds and slivered almonds to your liking.

Broccoli Salad

Broccoli Salad

A nice break from just veggies and colorful too, which this time of the year we can use more of!!!  Good as a main dish or side dish and even the guys liked this one!!  It still tasted great and crispy the next day.

-1 head broccoli cut up, use mostly the florets and little of the stem

– 1/2 thinly sliced purple onion

-1/4 head purple cabbage thinly chopped or shredded

-1 yellow pepper thinly chopped

-1/4 cup chopped parsley

Mix all together in a bowl.

Mix together for the dressing

-2 oz toasted cold pressed sesame oil (optional but it does add a nice flavor, or just use olive oil)

-2 oz cold pressed olive oil

-1 oz Braggs or Nama Shoyu or Tamari

– juice of 1 lemon

-2 garlic cloves minced

– 2 tbsp honey

Mix up all ingredients for dressing, adjust to taste, pour over veggies and mix up, sprinkle sesame seeds in and mix again.

Milk – The Deadly Poison???

Milk – The Deadly Poison……

I stopped drinking milk many many years ago when I had a lot of stomach problems.  The funny thing is, when I look back on it is that it seemed I craved milk, wanted it more and had more problems, when I let it go, and I am sure it was over time as I was about 20 years old, I didn’t crave it, that is a sign sometimes there is an allergy or sensitivity.  As a parent, I didn’t give my kids milk, for awhile though, I did give them Raw Milk, as it was part of a diet thing we were doing. I gave them mostly Almond Milk and I hate to admit it as I didn’t know at the time but Soy Milk as well. Now there are people who drink Raw Milk and if that works for them, fine, but I wonder sometimes about the fact we are the only species drinking another species milk……hmmmmmm

One of my weaknesses at times still is good cheese………yup I admitted it here!! Sometimes I like to throw a little Brie into a salad or I have a Greek salad with some Feta and I am fine, but if I eat cheese I do pay for it later, I can feel the difference in my body, so it is getting so much easier to say no……….but I also know what is part of milk…….therefore cheese, yogurt and butter are condensed versions with the same crap that is added into regular milk………kind of scary isn’t it??  I don’t eat yogurt so that makes that easy and I use coconut oil instead of butter if I need to use it…….ok another weakness of mine is a big bowl of popcorn with a good movie once in awhile……organic popcorn so it’s not GMO’d and coconut oil on it, it’s great for my skin, hair and it tastes great!!

This is not new info, just I believe kept kind of quiet, watch the video and leave a comment, would love to know what you think!!

Have a Healthy and Fantastic Day!!

Here is another little video from David Wolfe

Raw Green Soup

Raw Green Soup

Looking for something quick for lunches and still healthy or raw?? And at this time of the year it’s nice to have warmer dishes.  I find by using somewhat hot water and I like spice, so adding chili peppers or warming spices it helps to take the coldness out.  This is quick, tasty and still nutritious.

8 Kale leaves

3 – 4 Basil leaves

1 Carrot

1 Avocado

Handful or parsley (I have small hands!!)

2 cloves garlic

pinch of celtic sea salt

1 cup Rejuvelac or water and it can be warm or hot if you are needing warmth

1/6 hot pepper (optional)

juice of 1/2 lemon

1/4 – 1/2 cup water (on top of water or Rejuvelac) depending on how thick you like it

Throw all ingredients into Vitamix or Blender and blend until the consistency you like.

Adjust salt, garlic, pepper to your taste.

Eat and Enjoy!!

Swiss Chard Salad

Swiss Chard Salad

I don’t know about you, but I am not craving a lot of salads these days when it’s pretty cold and damp!?  This is kind of the best of both, still getting greens, some raw and some warming food.  This can be a meal in itself or as a side dish.

-1 cup brown rice (or any kind you like)

-2 – 3 oz cold pressed olive oil

– 2 oz Braggs (or Tamari or even Soya Sauce but use less of it)

– juice of 1/2 lemon

– 2 garlic cloves

Mix all up together in a bowl

-1 head chopped swiss chard

-1/4 cup chopped parsley

chopped cilantro (optional)

-1 red pepper chopped

Mix in all together.

Sometimes I will add in chili peppers to give it some spice and then chopped avocado as well.

Sunflower Basil Spread

Sunflower Basil Spread

This makes for a nice appetizer or snack, whether you eat it with raw crackers, on celery or something else you like better.  I love having easy, quick and tasty snacks.

Sunflower Basil Spread

1 cup sunflower seeds processed in food processor until crumbly

8 basil leaves

1 clove garlic

2 chopped green onions

juice of 1 lemon

approx. 3 oz of water

1/4 cup sundried tomatoes if in oil, if dried soak in water for a little bit

celtic sea salt to taste

put all ingredients in processor with sunflower seeds, process well

Spread on crackers or your favorite thing, eat and enjoy!!

Stuffed Mushroom Caps

Stuffed Mushroom Caps

Most stuffed mushrooms are cooked but they don’t have to be!!!  Again, another fairly quick and easy raw recipe, who said fast food had to be junk!!

10 Mushrooms with caps removed

Put mushrooms in a bowl and add Toasted cold Pressed Sesame Oil, I find this oil adds a nice flavor, but Olive oil will work as well.

Sprinkle with some celtic sea salt and let marinate for at least 3 hrs, I have left it all day or overnight and that works too, just stir it once in a while.  You may need to add a little more oil as the mushrooms do soak it up, but you don’t want to much.

1/4 Cup Macadamia Nuts – put into processor, you can process them first and grind them fine and it will make the mixture smoother                                                   or you can grind them with the other ingredients and it will be a little chunkier. I have done it both ways I like                                                 it both ways.

2 Tbsp Nama Shoyu or Braggs or Tamari

2 cloves garlic

1 Cup packed Spinach leves

approx 4 – 6 leaves of fresh basil

juice of 1 lemon

process up till it’s mixed nicely, you may have to stop and scrap down sides  afew times

sometimes I also add back in chopped up a couple of mushrooms stems, but that is optional

Fill the mushrooms with mixture and serve as an appetizer.
